Saddle Up the RPG

well, until someone claims Harry I will play him


Jeb took a deep breath of the brisk air. it was only four am but he was up and getting the fire stirred up for a quick breakfast. the cattle drive had taken longer than they had expected and even though he liked the open air he wanted to get home. their dad hadn't come with them and he was a little worried about the others. Harry could handle anything that came their way but in all honesty he wondered how Kate was fairing. she was the most vulnerable of all of them. Oh and Summer. she had been living with them for six months now and was probably driving Harry up the wall
"hey sleeping beauty you getting up?" he asked of his pink haired sister

Marshal, having heard the fire being stirred, rolled over and opened his eyes to see the barely light sky. He pushed himself out of the sleeping bag and then to his feet, walking over to the fire and his older brother. "Hey," he said with a yawn as he sat next to Jeb.

Jeb nodded, " is she up yet?" he asked. Jeb wasn't exactly known for smiling especially out in the field

"I'm getting up, I'm getting up," Lucy said, rolling over.
Marshal grinned. "She'll probably be up in a few... I mean, it's Summer we have to worry about sleeping in."

Jeb did chuckle, "yeah and that's exactly why she never comes out on these things." he pointed out putting on the coffee. he drew in a long deep breath, " I'm glad she's home."

"Yeah," Marshal agreed. "It was weird when she was gone."

he nodded. it had felt empty some how. even though she complained enough for all of them she was still their sister and she needed to be home where she belonged.
he threw the potatoes onto the coals

Lucy groaned and pushed herself up into a sitting position. "I'm up, I'm up."

he rolled his eyes, " if you don't hurry breakfast will be over."

Lucy got up and stretched as she joined the boys. "Coffee ready yet?" she asked as she sat on the other side of Jeb.

he filled a cup, " half tempted not to give you any." he handed the cup to her

She smiled and took the cup. "Thank you, darling older brother," she said before taking a sip.
"We'll be home soon, right?" Marshal asked, unable to completely keep the hope out of his voice.

he shook his head, " Lucy one of these days I'll really not give you breakfast."


Harry put the dishes in the sink. Summer had missed breakfast and he wasn't about to be as soft on her as Jeb was

Summer rolled over in her bed, causing her hair to get in her face. She was warm under the old n worn quilt that lied on her bed. She opened her eyes for a moment and saw that the it was way too early to be awake in her book, she hated to be awake when it was earlier than 5:00am, but she hated being awake at after that time as well. She moved her hair off her face and tried to fall back to sleep.

Lucy sighed and nodded. "I'm sorry, Jeb."

Harry scraped the left overs into the muck bucket and the hands went outside to start the daily work
Jeb nodded and handed her a piping hot potato, " don't sweat it."

She took the potato and slipped it from hand to hand while it cooled.
Marshal chuckled, watching this action.

Summer woke about half an hour later, knowing that if she didn't get up now she would be in for it, especially with Jeb, Marshall, and Lucy gone. She got and hurried into the bathroom to get ready for the day. She put her face on and wore a apricot colored henley top with jeans and her dark orange boots. She had to work outside today. YUCK. She nwalked downstairs and hated the way the steps creaked as she walked down them. This home was just so ugh.

She went into the kitchen to find that she missed breakfast. She rolled her eyes and walked outsdie to find Harry.

Jeb was also quite amused though he focused on his potato

Harry was feeding the pigs, " I thought I'd have to come drag you out of bed by your feet."

Once it was cool enough to eat, Lucy did so quickly so they could get going.
Marshal did the same.

"So in other words you want me to go back to bed?" she asked, with a small smirk in her mind. She got the food for one of the pregnant cattle they had, and went in the barn to see her. "Here's your breakfast May" she told the white cow that had black spots/smudges all over her back. They had had her since she was a calf.

Harry had been momentarily tempted to throw some of the slop on her but refrained.


Jeb cinched up his saddle. everything was packed up and the fire was out, " you two ready?"

Summer went on to feed the chickens in the chicken coop and came back out when she was finished. Feeding the chickens was her least favorite chore. THey chickens were so annoying inside the coop, all making noise at once and wanting food.

Lucy nodded as she swung herself into the saddle. "Ready, boss."
Marshall checked his saddle one more time. "Yeah, I'm set," he said as he pulled himself into the saddle and gathered the bridle in his hands.

"I need help stacking the hay," he said without hardly even looking at her as he headed for the barn

Summer followed him into the barn, over to the hay.

Jeb nodded and off they were again. they had let the cattle out of the home made corral and were herding them home

Harry put on his gloved, " I'm not Jeb so...no whining."

"I am not whining, thank you very much" she said to her year older brother. He made her so angry sometimes, especially back in high school when guys asked her out.

It was easy to ride towards home, Marshal could tell both of his older siblings were glad to be on their way home. It would be good to see the others again, even if it did mean listening to Summer complain.

"Really?" he asked taking a hay bail off of the truck, " because to those of us listening it sure sounds like whining

Jeb cracked his whip once to turn the cattle

She just rolled her eyes in her mind and grabbed a hay bail off the truck.

they stacked without saying a word. Kate was in school though he thought that she should be home schooled so she could help.


it took hours but finally Jeb could see the ranch house. he smiled at his siblings

"Almost there!" Lucy called with a grin.

When Summer finished she sat on the edge of the bed of the truck for a minute then got back up to get abck to chores.

Jeb would have gone into a full out gallop but he couldn't with the cattle though he wanted to

Once they'd hearded the animals into their corral and closed the gate, Marshal slid off his horse, stretching his legs thankfully.

Jeb dismounted and unsaddled his horse, " we should probably go find Summer and Harry before they kill each other."

After getting another chore done Summer went inside to wash her hands and make herself hot chocolate since she didn't get any breakfast. She put the coco powder in the mug and poured some hot water from the kettle into her mug. She stirred it and took a sip. She went and stood in the doorway seeing her siblings come home from their travel.

Lucy nodded as she dismounted as well. "good idea. Losing either of them wouldn't help us get all the work done, even if it meant no more complaining or daredevil stunts."

Harry was muttering angrily as he finished stacking the hay

Jeb saw Summer in the door and walked up to her, " is it noon yet?" he asked knowing very well there were a few more hours till noon
