"Of course," she said with a smile and a nod, "you want to bake in black dress?" she asked her thick accent pealing through every word

"Oh," she looked down at her dress and shoes. "I'll change first."

"Yeah. That Elena girl." Christine answered without looking up from the transmission she was taking apart. "There was a big crowd there."

the cook smiled, " I'll get food out and we make the pie when you are changed."

he nodded, "they always gather in crowds."

Chris nodded. "They do." she sighed and wiped her forehead, smearing a bit of grease across her skin. "I'm going to be a little late tonight."

her dad slid out from under the car, "yeah?"

"Yeah. I agreed to meet with a friend. But I told him only half an hour."

ooc: did we pick a name for the ex boyfriend?

"Him?" he asked with a questioning brow

ooc: I'm thinking Patrick

ooc: ok

ic: "Patrick," she answered the question, looking back at the pieces she was clutching.

"Patrick." he cracked the k through his mouth like a walnut, "didn't realize he was back in town."

"He has been for about a week. I've been trying to avoid him, but he asked to see me and I said I'd give him half an hour after work." Chris was clearly less than thrilled about it.

"I guess that boy is kind of like a magnet you can't shake." he said rolling back under the car

"Half an hour, then I'll be home," she said. "I don't want to be around him, dad."

"thats good to hear Chris." he replied, "but I hope that will be enough this time." he didn't want to be over bearing but he couldn't help it. he hated that kid and the fact that chris was even speaking to him got under his skin

ic: She nodded. She knew that her dad meant well, especially after what happened the last time. But she hoped that he would trust her, she could handle Patrick.

"what do you want Nate to have for dinner?" he asked after a moment of silence

"I promised him Mac and Cheese tonight. But I think Jennifer said she would take care of it," she replied, naming her younger sister.

"good to know. I was worried I'd have to go near the stove," he said his dry humor showing

Chris laughed. "You get out of it this time," she teased.

Adelaide nodded and headed up to her room. She quickly changed out of her black pumps and dress then put them in her walk in closet. Adelaide pulled on jeans and a sweater and walked back to the kitchen. "What should I do first?" She asked Patrice

her dad was smiling though no one could see it under the car where he was working.

Patrice smiled, "what exactly do you want to make?"

"An apple pie," Adelaide said. "Is is hard to make?"

Chris threw herself into work, hoping her dad wouldn't mention Patrick again.

She shook her head, "Not hard. time consuming. not hard." Patrice handed her a bowl and showed her how to mix up the pie dough, "did you not learn this in Paris?" she asked as they dumped the dough out of the bowl onto the counter

Adelaide shook her head. "I learned very little about baking. I only made simple things," she said.

"Never too late to learn," the Asian woman said wrapping the dough in plastic wrap and put it into the fridge, "now we need to cut the apples." she said handing a knife and an apple to Adelaide

Eventually it was the end of Chris's shift. She wiped her hands off, unable to get all the grease off. "Do you need anything else before I take off?" She asked her dad.

"Just be careful," he replied tossing a look over his shoulder

She looked down at the knife and apple, " how small should the pieces be?"

she quickly cut up the apple into eighths and showed her, "take your time. make sure to not cut yourself."

Adelaide nodded and slowly cut up an apple. "How many do we need to cut?"

"Five," Patrice answered watching her, "you a natural with the knife."

Patrick ran his hand over his slicked back dark hair at the burger place. why did he feel so nervous. he had no reason to.

She smiled, "thank you. It's easier than I thought it would be."

"It just takes time." she replied
"hows the baking coming?" her mom asked her heals clacking on the tile floor as she walked into the kitchen

"Wonderfully," Adelaide said. "The dough is done and we're just finishing the apple."

Chris entered the restaurant and spotted him on the other side of the place. She took a deep breath and walked across to join him.

"Oh," her mother said a little surprised, " I thought you were making cookies?"

Patrick smiled up at her, "wasn't sure you would come."
