"I want you to try thinking about every force that could affect an arrow or other flying object: the Earth's pull, the movement of wind, even the condition of the bow that shoots the arrow....then imagine such elements becoming a shield for you, that redirects the missile away from you. I cannot tell you exactly what form your spell will take, for there may be words or gestures that work better for you than mine do for me. Take some time, and when you are prepared to give it a try, I shall toss another twig at you and see if you can divert it."

"Ok" Morgans smile turned into a relaxed look as she let the wind ruffle her hair as she focused on it. She then focused on all the other elements like the pull of graverty. These things were constants that she could feel all the time. She then imagined the arrow shooting at her and what they would feel like. What it felt like on the other occasions it had happend. She then moved her shouder and arm in the direction she wanted it to go. "Ok" She said bairly over a wisper as she opend her eyes. "Try again please". She kept a hold on all these elements as she waited for the twig.

Vivien picked up a twig larger than the one she had playfully tossed at first, but still small enough that it could not possibly hurt her beloved if it did strike her....and threw it on a level with Morgan's stomach.

The twig was not exactly turned away from its target; it did touch Morgan; but it touched her a bit off-center, perhaps three inches to Morgan's right from where it should have touched as Vivien threw it.

"Darling, you ARE having an effect. Not enough yet, but an effect."

Mogan smiled. This helped her boost her confidence a little so that wehn the next stick was thrown at her it went eve futher off untill the stick complatly missed her a few throws later. "I did it!" she beamed once a few had missed her just to make sure. She was so happy she hugged Vivian. "Thank you for teaching me this. I just need to practice so that I don't have to concentrait so much and so that I can hit a larger object like an arrow. "

Beaming at the progress made by her dearest, Vivien seemed more enchantingly beautiful than Morgan had ever seen her; and in Vivien's eyes, Morgan was likewise more lovely than ever. Falling silent for a moment, they leaned into each other to kiss again.

When the silence was next broken, their embrace was not broken; and again there was a hint of pleading in Vivien's voice. "When you say that YOU will practice, I hope you do not mean practice without me?"

After more kisses, Vivien turned pedantic once more.

"You do indeed need to develop the force to deflect an object that is coming in hard and fast enough that it could harm you. But I cannot bear any risk of harm coming to you in the learning; so let us work on your deflection of an object flying PAST you. The same principle is involved, after all."

Vivien stooped and found three stones on the ground. "I will hurl each of these at the trunk of that oak over there. You stand close to the line the stones will follow through the air, and try to turn them away from their target--of course, NOT by turning them toward yourself."

Morgan had been able to turn the first stone when her aunt made the very lightest underhand toss; but when thrown with any greater force, Morgan had so far been unable to affect them. Now, forgetting the training at the first hint of distress to Morgan, Vivien anxiously gathered the girl in her arms again. "Goddess give wellness, Goddess give wholeness, Goddess give soundness, Goddess give oneness," she softly chanted.

"Beloved," Vivien whispered, "let me be your place of repose and recovery. We shall not do anything strenuous until you feel better, but we will not be parted; for I confess that the thought of parting from you only becomes more grievous to me every time I think of it."

Vivien lay on her back on the carpet of fallen leaves, arranging Morgan directly on top of her, face to face and enclosed in each other's arms.

Vivien gently drew Morgan's lips to her own. When their lips drew apart again, she told Morgan: "This protection spell need not be perfected in a single day. Already you are doing very well. And as long as we are together, anyone who would harm you will have me to reckon with."

Vivien rolled them over together, not loosening their hold on each other, so that she lay on top. "Your poor aching head has forgotten that tomorrow morning is when, hopefully, we deliver Excalibur to Arthur. Not until that business is done will we know how long it takes, or what we do next. But at whatever time we resume your spell devising, I know you will do well." She kissed Morgan's forehead and cheeks, then rolled herself underneath again to cushion Morgan's head on her shoulder.
