In the years since Arthur's crowning, as duty permitted, Merlin had taught literacy to many of the guards and servants in Camelot, women included. Now the wizard called together a score of those he had thus educated, and instructed them to search the castle for any sign of writing or inscribed symbols not known to belong there already. "Do not touch these writings if you find them, but show me where they are."

The search found nothing untoward, which reinforced the impression that Morgan had not attempted any magical harm to the High King or his authority. Merlin then wrote a message, and summoned to him a beautiful female falcon. Speaking words of guiding over the noble bird, he sent her to carry his short letter to Arthur. It was in Latin, which Arthur had learned from his wizard mentor. It read:

"Sire, Baron Kevin and I beat Saxons. I am at your castle. Morgan departed; her intentions not clear. Merlin Ambrosius."

Arthur smiled at the maiden, a big, hopeful smile.

Sir Ector, the knight who raised Arthur, is old and may die soon, which will make Sir Kay the owner of that estate. Since Kay is busy serving Arthur, Ector officially appoints Melona's father William Twyti as steward of the family property.

Melonà was walking to the market to get fresh fruit for the baker" I'm so tired," she said to herself, looking around to sit.

A young man in the war-harness of a squire, armed with sword and bow, rode up on a fine chestnut gelding. He looked only a year or two older than Melona.

"Good maiden, are you not the daughter of the huntsman Master Twyti? I may have seen you at a past visit to Castle Sauvage. My father is King Pellinore, a friend to Sir Ector; I am called Aglovale. I am sent to bring good news from the battlefield."

She looked up at him with a smile " Yes, I'm Melonà what is thy have?," she asked.

"My news is no secret from any," said Squire Aglovale, "for 'tis happy news to all." He raised his voice to be heard by the bystanders, many of whom were already gazing at him in curiosity. "Good people of Forest Sauvage! I am freshly come from the field of King Arthur's victory, where I served as squire to my brother Sir Lamorak. No more shall King Lot of Orkney plunder his neighbors, and no more shall King Uriens be drawn into evil schemes with him."

"What, are their heads stricken from their necks, as ought be?" asked an old woman.

"No, good mother, but their heads ARE bowed in defeat, knowing their lives to be granted them only at the High King's sufferance. I am here to tell your master Sir Ector that all is well with his son Sir Kay. And how fares the lord of the manor?"

"Alas, our kindly lord fails more than he fares. Wisely has he made confession of his sins, for he may be in our Heavenly Lord's presence before the month be out."

"Then I must meet with him the sooner." Aglovale slid down from his steed and said to Melona, "Mount you instead, sweet maiden, for you look weary, and at the same time you will be less burden to my noble beast than I have been."

She smiled " Why think you kind sir," she told him, getting on his horse.

Aglovale took the reins and carefully led his chestnut with the side-seated girl upon it. Peasants pleased with his news were already running ahead to the castle's main gate, shouting that Arthur was victorious and Ector's heir was safe.

"You are Melona Twyti, are you not?" asked the squire. "You have certainly found your way to young womanhood since last I saw you!"

She nodded " Yes, I'm Melonà do I know thy if thy work in the castle, if so I haven't seen you there," she told him, holding tight on him so she won't fall off.

The messenger squire was met by Master Twyti, who helped his daughter down from the horse, then summoned a groom to unsaddle and rub down the animal. Soon Aglovale was in the presence of the bedridden Sir Ector, telling him:

"Your noble son acquitted himself excellently in the battle, both in slaying foes with his own arm and in skillfully commanding the High King's right flank. Losses for our side, by the grace of God, are very low. Your son the Seneschal is unhurt."

"My thanks to you, son of my friend. If it should be God's will to summon me away before Kay returns, I have at least enjoyed good news of him." Noticing Melona watching beside her father, old Sir Ector said, "Maid Melona, you surely remember this squire's family, the family of King Pellinore, which dwells on the north edge of Wales and keeps an eye on the Welsh for our great King?"

" Ah, yes, I do Sir, but I didn't know they had a son," she told him, smiling at the squire who brought her there " Papa is all right if I take a walk in the court yard with him?," she asked, then looked down " I mean if you don't mind coming with me," she told Aglovale

"If it be acceptable to your father," Aglovale replied to Melona, "I shall be most pleased to stroll about with you in respectable daylight conversation...AFTER my report to Sir Ector is completed."

"If you stay in the courtyard and gateway area, I have no objection," said William Twyti.

Sir Ector was not so far gone that he could not be amused by the way Squire Aglovale hurried up his report about King Arthur's actions at Leodegrance's castle. He appreciated the lad's self-discipline, though; Aglovale did not look again at the lovely girl who was looking at him, until his information was all presented.

"Good enough, Aglovale," Sir Ector finally coughed out. "Now go and enjoy being young while you can, provided you never forget that God and Master Twyti are watching you!"

Aglovale bowed to the fief lord and the steward, then turned toward Melona. "Good maiden, does this castle still have as well-kept a moat as I seem to recall? When I visited as a boy, it pleased me to watch the fish swimming in it."

She nodded " It's sure is," she told him, with her hands behind her back while walking to the court yard " And yes, Papa we well," she told him, before they got to far away from her father.

"Shall we sit here on the edge?" suggested Aglovale, once they came onto the drawbridge from which the passing fish could be well seen.
