Now Ranjit lifted Candice till she was nose to nose with him. "Candice, when that new fish came into the aquarium, do you think they threw all the other fish out the window?" When he asked this question, he moved the tiny girl slightly in a pretended throwing. |

Before the manta ray came, all the men and women who work at the aquarium got together in one room, just like we're in one room right now. Then they talked about how they would take care of a new fish, and STILL keep on taking care of the other fish too. Now, the other fish in the big tanks didn't know that a new fish was coming, but the aquarium workers knew just what to do. So when they had everything ready, they put the manta in the biggest tank, and you know what? It didn't hurt the other fish at all to have him there, because the aquarium workers still cared about the other fish as much as they ever did. ALL the fish were taken care of." |

| Ranjit was so accustomed to Glenda and her mother being thick as thieves, he had just been assuming that Mrs. Peaters would have heard about Glenda's pregnancy before he had. But he didn't panic at his first intimation that it was not so; he simply stayed on course. "Now, I weigh about one hundred eighty-five pounds, and this apartment can handle me. So I think the apartment will be all right if someone else comes to stay with us who weighs about nine pounds. Don't you think so, Glenda?" |

| Ranjit tried very hard not to look smug. Just as he was close to losing the fight, Sammy, who had been striving to add it all up, climbed alongside him to whisper in his ear, "You boom-banged her, didn't you?"
Ranjit in turn whispered in Sammy's ear, "Don't say it that way anymore, but yes, that's what I did. Only, I did it in a way that did NOT hurt Glenda. We'll talk more about it when you're older--not now." Five or six hours after the above scene, Danny and Tashonda Alyard lay down to sleep in a bed which they themselves had not used once in the whole time since the hasty Christmas Day move out of the other apartment. But for sleeping, this was little improvement over the floor--since both adults had to balance themselves on opposite edges of the mattress. The central space of the bed was occupied by Latisha and Jackson. |

| Ranjit had been afraid that the foster children would be afraid that a child born biologically to Glenda and himself would result in the foster children no longer being loved. Apparently, he had succeeded better than he thought he had at making the four kids feel secure in his love for them; the greater difficulty was in simply explaining the FACT of Glenda's pregnancy to them. That is, to all but Sammy, whose life experience left him better aware than his peers of just what brought babies into the world. |

Of us three adults, I have made more of a pragmatic change than either of you two did, by suspending my engineering studies so near to completion. That was not done rashly, I assure you. My contracted language-translation work has been growing steadily; if you care to look over our records again, you'll see that I now earn almost as much as you and Glenda combined. And I have additional prospects. You don't have to worry about me being some careless Peter Pan; I always have the welfare of my family in mind. So please allow yourself to be glad that our family is being enlarged; or if not glad, at least kindly don't make the children feel something is wrong. And there's no need to remind me that you were caring for them before I was; it's BECAUSE of your long relationship with them that I appeal to you not to make them unhappy with no need." |
