| ooc: could you play the uncle? they were met at the door by Lolita's aunt who smiled though it was not as warm as usual and hugged her niece and shot a glare at Lowell then beckoned them in. she didn't say a word in English but did murmur a few things to Lolita in Hindi. they walked through the house to the main parlor and there was Lolita's Uncle. he looked severe enough though he stood when they entered _________________ well now that its Monday I felt I needed to update. | ~ ~ Okay, I'll try to make him act the way you described his personality. The uncle's greeting was not warm, but at least it did not take the form of a fist, a cane, or a command to turn around and get out. "I'm glad at least that you came of your own initiative. It's a serious business you've given us to deal with; but I would think much worse of you if you had stayed hidden. As it is, we're all adults, and can try to be constructive. My niece assures me that you're not a predatory exploiter, and I've always known her to be both a smart and a truthful girl. Have a seat--not the same seat as my niece."
Lowell did as he was bidden, uttering his first words (and his first lie) of the visit: "For what it's worth, I had formed an intention of proposing marriage to Lolita before the first time I so much as lay in a clothed horizontal embrace with her."
"Although almost any man in your position would say something like that, I will grant you this: that I spoke with the president of your college, and I find you are known for scrupulously keeping your hands off of girl students there." The uncle did not SEEM to be hinting that it might have been different--as in fact it HAD been different--at Lowell's previous two teaching jobs. |

| ~~thanks Lolita did not want to let go of Lowell's hand but would have to do so if they were to sit in different seats. she slowly un-twined her hand from his and sat down by her Aunt on the love seat leaving the couch and an armchair open for her love. she rested her hands folded in her lap trying her hardest to keep them from touching her stomach. she needed to be strong. Her Aunt pored tea for everyone as it was ready before they arrived and then sat, " Lolita told me everything Mr. Sanders." she said in a very serious tone, " and in like manner I told my husband everything." she took a deep breath letting her husband speak. _________________ well now that its Monday I felt I needed to update. | "One thing I can truthfully say in your favor to Lolita's parents," the uncle continued, "is that, if you two had been allowed to marry as soon as you wished to, the conception date of this baby would have fallen well _after_ your wedding, and there would be no stigma to Lolita's pregnancy at all." The glance he sent at his wife as he said this hinted that he, not she, had been the one to realize this somewhat exculpating fact.
Lowell was more, not less uneasy, because he was less sure of the ground he stood on. So far, he had only told them one lie in this interview, and it was hard to expose because it was only about his own inner thoughts. The aunt claimed that Lolita had told her everything; but had Lolita _really_ revealed everything, or did the aunt only _think_ she had revealed everything? Was the aunt bluffing, hoping to trip him up? Did the uncle agree with her use of the tactic? If Lowell had been in the aunt's place, he would have tried just such a trick to make the other party expose any secrets. He was annoyed at Lolita for not briefing him better; but knowing her innocent spirit, he had better assume Lolita had _really_ told her aunt everything she herself knew. This would include all of Lowell's past remarks to Lolita which had mocked the institution of marriage. But in case the girl had managed any discretion, Lowell would be as noncommittal as he could, for as long as he could.
"You already knew that I had two wives leave me for other men. Life did make me bitter and cynical about traditional marriage; but Lolita was healing my spirit--IS healing my spirit. And you're right, there would be no premarital pregnancy if she and I could have married as soon as we wanted to."

| The aunt took a deep breath, " Mr. Sanders, why did you not..." she thought about her question for a second and reconsidered, " after speaking to my brother on the fact of engagement and when a date had been set, why did you not honor that date? I understand very well that you are an American man with very little understanding of true tradition but you knew Lolita's family and I believe you understood where her father stood so why then sir, did you not wait to be with my niece?" " I wanted it," Lolita said quietly, " I'm sorry and the gods forgive me but I wanted it. I wanted to...I love him." She nodded in acknowledgment to her niece but then turned again to Lowell, " that may be...yet you are the man...and older." she wanted him to explain himself _________________ well now that its Monday I felt I needed to update. | What the aunt was now saying could only be said honestly by the aunt if the aunt believed that the first sex between Lowell and Lolita had not happened until after they were engaged. This would mean that Lolita had in fact NOT told quite all to the aunt. Wanting to back up Lolita's story, Lowell gambled that his perception was correct; at the same time, he tried to hedge his bet by not saying any unnecessary untruths.
"If I had no regard at all for tradition, I could have asked Lolita to marry me secretly before she left this country. She is of age, and would not legally need permission. In fact, I could have asked her to marry me openly well before her trip to India. After all, I was not after her for her money; if you've investigated me, surely you know that I have an independent income, enough to have supported Lolita quite sufficiently with no one else's help. Still, I did begin with an intention of going along with her parents' wishes.
"This is not to pass blame onto Lolita, for as you say, I am the man. But I'm trying to explain how my weakness came about. Greatly though I admire your culture--and everyone who knows me can tell you how much I esteem it above crude, linear Western thought--I am not flawless in the renunciation of desire. I could appeal to some of your own Hindu poets who wrote of Krishna taking a mistress with no need of marriage; but I didn't come here to debate with you, nor to justify my actions dishonestly. It wasn't so hard keeping limits with Lolita physically when I could at least speak with her daily; but with the prospect of her long absence, I was filled with a dread that being in India might make her memories of me fade. I was in fact affected by an earthly desire, though a desire which aimed at permanence. Lolita says that she wanted it; this merely means that she consented, when she realized how desperate I was for assurance. Of course I would never have used any kind of force on her; but her gentle heart was moved by my fear of losing her love." |

| ~ ~ And how am I supposed to know what words to put in the uncle's mouth, when I, Joseph "Copperfox" Ravitts, _don't_ know whether Lolita told her aunt that she and Lowell had already been sexually active _before_ the engagement? |

| >> So the aunt is using the uncle to entrap Lowell? Oooohh, dat so gonna backfire on her. The uncle had been silently attempting to read both his wife's body language and Lowell's. He wasn't accomplishing much, except to feel sure that (1) his wife was in one of her smugly superior moods, and (2) Lowell--like the uncle--was anxious to know what the aunt was really thinking about. To buy a moment, he said to Lowell, "I am disappointed in you; but then, most of your countrymen would already be on to the next girl by now--except for the very same deeply religious men whom you hold in contempt."
Unlike Lowell, the uncle could question his wife in Hindi--and he turned and did so, though skillfully disguising his annoyance at what he suspected. "Wife, do you know something you are not telling me? Are you allowing me to proceed in ignorance, as if only you are competent to handle knowledge? If you are so concerned for tradition, tradition gives me authority over you. So, if there is a secret kept from me, tell me NOW--or else, never again claim to be the defender of tradition." |

| By now Lolita was hardly breathing. her aunt took a deep breath, " I don't believe him of being as honest as he claims." Lolita's hands balled at her sides she shook her head knowing that saying more would not only show Lowell to be a lire but also would show that Lolita had let herself be with this man before they had even thought of talking with her father. she so wanted to protect her niece _________________ well now that its Monday I felt I needed to update. | ~ ~ I give you my word of honor, MJ, that what follows is what I _already_ had in mind for the uncle to say _before_ I saw your latest post. It was getting harder for the uncle {can we NAME this couple?} to hide his irritation from Lowell; he would need to reach some resolution in a hurry. "I do not like being treated like a fool, wife. Y ou are not answering my question. It was already obvious that you do not think this teacher an honest man, what with the way you have scowled at him and pressed him with hostile questions. Here I am trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, trying to leave him some hope of making things right--and you prod him, trip him up, seeming determined to condemn him! Have you no feeling for the happiness of our niece, who so dearly loves this teacher? Y es, he has faults; who does not? But however great his faults, I believe he wants to do better. Now, either TELL me exactly what you are hiding....or by the goddess whose name is borne by the family of your birth, I swear I will support this teacher and try to make things work out for him and our niece, even if I find out he had FIFTY mistresses between his last marriage and his meeting our niece!!" /// Since this has gone unanswered, let me add a separate scene, happening at least a couple of hours later than the above..... As he was driving home, Danny hit some heavy traffic, apparently caused by an accident blocks ahead. Emergency services appeared to have everything in hand, so he would not need to join in the action as a policeman; but this was going to add to his commute. Reaching Tashonda by phone, he told her what was happening, also mentioning what radio station she could tune to for the best traffic report to indicate how long he would be stuck. Then:
" Here's an idea to bring some good out of this, darling. Your mother's been a real hero, trying to give us privacy at night by taking so much of the load with the kids on herself. Since I won't be home as quick as I thought anyway, why not see what we can do to show appreciation for your mother? Like an early Valentine gift! I see two options. Either you make supper only for me and the kids, then the very minute I do get home you take your mother to a restaurant and a movie while I mind the kids; or else, you get some friend to go eat out with your mother, you wait for me, and then you and I play with the kids together." |

| ooc: I had named them for Lolita's Party but I forgot what I named them The Aunt didn't respond to his demand right away. the truth would condemn both the man and the girl. she lowered her head and said quietly but very clearly, " after the engagement was not their first liaison was the night of Lolitas Birthday." she said in English Toshanda liked that idea and promptly set about contacting one of her mothers few friends _________________ well now that its Monday I felt I needed to update. | The uncle stood for long seconds like a freeze-frame picture. Then something pressed his Play button. Without immediately looking at the startled Lowell, he said in English, "Young man, we have been unfair to you, speaking over your head in our ancestral tongue. In brief, I was asking my wife what more there was to tell that I did not know. Her eventual answer to that, you have just heard in English. But while we spoke in Hindi, I was boasting of myself that I was giving you the benefit of the doubt."
Now he faced Lowell. "So I am caught in the snare of my own words. I _must_ give you the benefit of the doubt. Accordingly, listen to what I choose to believe. I believe that you were limiting the truth you admitted to, _more_ to protect Lolita than to protect yourself. I _still_ believe that you desire to do better than you have done before, and even that you mean to do right by Lolita if she does marry you."
"Yes, sir, all of that IS true, though I have nothing to swear by." Lowell's voice sounded the most honest yet. |

| "This does make our role harder in convincing my brother," Lolita's Aunt said slowly, " you have injured yourself and you have damaged Lolita's standing with her family greatly." " Aunt I wanted it." Lolita protested but was silenced " because of that fact her father will be even harder to persuade." _________________ well now that its Monday I felt I needed to update.
