This week it was announced that Rachelle Leferve was going to be replaced by Dallas Bryce as Victoria in Eclipse. At first it sounded like it was Rachelle who had decided to drop the role. Because Rachelle did such an amazing job as Victoria, I was very disappointed. It was also kind of surprising that she wouldn't return for her star-role in Eclipse. Rachelle is known to love her fans, her role in the Twilight Saga, and all things related to Twilight. The next day I learned that it was not up to Rachelle. In fact, Rachelle was as surprised as her fans were by the Summit's announcement.
Here is what happened in Rachelle's words...
“I was fully committed to the ‘Twilight’ saga, and to the portrayal of Victoria. I turned down several other film opportunities and, in accordance with my contractual rights, accepted only roles that would involve very short shooting schedules. My commitment to ‘Barney’s Version’ is only ten days. Summit picked up my option for ‘Eclipse.’ Although the production schedule for ‘Eclipse’ is over three months long, Summit said they had a conflict during those ten days and would not accommodate me. Given the length of filming for ‘Eclipse,’ never did I fathom I would lose the role over a 10 day overlap. I was happy with my contract with Summit and was fully prepared to continue to honor it. Summit chose simply to recast the part.”
She then went on to say...
“I am greatly saddened that I will not get to complete my portrayal of Victoria for the ‘Twilight’ audience. This is a story, a theatrical journey and a character that I truly love and about which I am very passionate. I will be forever grateful to the fan support and loyalty I’ve received since being cast for this role, and I am hurt deeply by Summit’s surprising decision to move on without me. I wish the cast and crew of ‘Eclipse’ only the very best,”
Why is this an EPIC FAIL on Summit's part?
Twilight has MILLIONS....count 'em....MILLIONS of extremely HARD CORE fans....like obsessive hard core. Twilight has also brought in MILLIONS of dollars to Summit Entertainment due to the hardcoreness of the fans. For those who don't understand the fandom here are a few examples:
That's like Warner Bros replacing Tom Felton in the seventh Harry Potter movie....
Disney replacing Orlando Bloom in forth Pirates movie...
Fox replacing Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in Xmen...
It's like one of the F.R.I.E.N.D.S being replaced, Carlos Bernard being replaced as Tony Almeida in 24, or Jorge Garcia being replaced as Hurley on LOST.
In plain English, it just doesn't make sense. Unless you're speaking money- then it makes PERFECT sense.
When a movie has the huge following that the Twilight Saga does you don't EVER mess around with replacing beloved characters. Although Victoria is a villain in Twilight, Rachelle has gained an enormous following among these hardcore fans. Today she posted a link to her official statement on her official, verified twitter (http://twitter.com/RachelleLefevre. Just as an example of the passion and numbers of the Twilight fanbase, in less than an hour and 20 minutes #BringBackRachelle was already a "Trending Topic" on Twitter. There are at least two petitions circulating the web with thousands of signatures. JB got the Summit Entertainment phone number and called them. The receptionist (whom I feel very, very sorry for today) answered and JB asked if they had an email. She sighed and said, "For complaints?" She said that they didn't and JB informed her, for her sake, they should get one cause she's sure they'll be getting lots of calls today. Turns out they do have an email...two actually.
efeig@summit-ent.comrfriedman@summit-ent.comThe internet has TWIPLODED due to this epic fail by Summit. They have cast Bryce Dallas for the role of Victoria in Eclipse. It's not that people hate her, but she doesn't have a chance at being a great Victoria due to the loyalty of Twilight fans to Rachelle.
Summit: EPIC EPIC FAIL
